Dear Destination Travels,
Stop it.
I can't begin to describe the feeling here in Brno, but I'm going to try anyway. Lindsey and I staied in a hostel in the center of the city, there we made amazing fast friends. Good memories to be had there. But where the fun really began was on the walking tour.
Free walking tours are so amazing. Our guide, Martin, was humorus and knowledgeable. Everything you want in a guide. He showed us the sights, painted us this history and legends of the city, and slipped us Intel on the best local spots. The architecture of the city changes quickly but has has a story behind why. Going through wars and power shifts and what not, Brno has been through a lot and the city preserves that character. While small and not on the tourist map, it was filled with great life, history, community.
I don't know how more people haven't been here, but that is also what makes it so amazing. Our time in Brno was one full day and two nights. Not a lot of time, but somehow we made time streach. The best shot I captured was here. In the back ground you can see a castel, part of a cathedral, and many r3d roofs.
Sadly, expanding every second still didn't alow me to record a whole lot. So I'll write down a few things we did.
1. The walking tour: Amazing history and tips for two hours. Our guide was fantastic and gave us so many ideas for afterwards. The guide actually showed us a building that had a cafe on top and we could look out on the city for free. This was ad freak score because it costs a pretty penny to go on top of cathedrals.
2. One owe and two shops: There was this man who would make the best coffee only during festivals. The locals kept asking for him to make a store so they could have it everyday. So he did! It got so busy that he bought the place across the road! The place across the road had a vegertian all you can eat buffet untill 2:00pm. This is where lindsey, myself and a few new friends had lunch. The story of thr shops were good, but the food was even better!
3. Vegan Ice Cream: there is this little pink cart in the old town square that sells the BEST ice cream. It tasted like summer, crisp fruity flavors. Mine was a deep orange color that sort of tasted like oranges, but more marmalade ish with a little somethin' else. I couldn't quite pin down what it was but I also could not stop eating it. Lindsey's cone was roped with white cream with flakes of basel in it. It tasted fresh and spicey. If we ever went back I would probably try every flavor. They all looked so good.
4. The good deeds cart: Also in the old town square there is the red coffee card. The customers who frequent this cart don't pay with cash, however, they pay with good deeds. You can come up with your own good deed, or take a fortune cookie. The cookies are in Czech, but someone will translate it for you. The kind people working at the stand get paied full wages but also get trained. The owner covers the cost and give his employee work experience and skills they can take with them. It's really awesome, but you have to do and we some good deed.
No, I don't need and we some cookie to tell me to do good deeds, but it's here and it's fun so I did it anyway. It was also 90° outside so hot coffee was and we some funny thing for me to drink. I picked a cookie that said make a dinner and clean the dishes, PERFECT for me!! Staying and the hostel, some new found friends, food is a great way to spread some joy and love. So I made tacos haha, they were great! It was fun and filled other bellies with more than just bread and cheese, our typical cheep dinners.
This was probably my favorite part of the day :)
5. A Cold War Bunker: Way outside of my comfort zone. I like being in sight of trees, sky, and grass. Underground, gas masks, cold concrete, and build out of fear does not suit me. But if I don't do things out of my comfort zone then how will I ever grow? So when the cold war was going on this bunker was built in case of of an attack. It is still fully operational. It was cold, spooky, and all together eerie AF.
The information it provided though was interesting. I took a really long video stream of the tour, if you want me to upload this to my youtube let me know in the comments below!!!
That about sums up our day! We did hang out with our new found friends and enjoyed our short time in Brno and the Hostel. It was such abound great experience. I can't believe we just happened to go there by luck. It was one of the best stops so far with great stories! If you ever get the opportunity, GO!! Destination stops about are great, but being one of 10 tourist is even better. It feels authentic. Brno was the frist stop were I felt like I was somewhere else in the world.
City's blur together and are the same on street level. In Brno I felt the history and it's quirks. It was somewhere easily missed but a true gem if you take the time. I still can't tell you how happy I am that we stumbled upon this town. Not a destination hot spot, but a real gem.
Go to Brno, go to other little cities! It's amazing.
Let me know if you would like me to post the cold war bunker tour in the comments below!
Thanks for reading,
Cassidy
