Awh the bus.
I am getting pretty good at riding the bus. But for you who are new to the seven or eight our bus ride let me give you some tips that might help!
1. Bring Snacks!!
When I went to Munich, Lindsey and I, made huge sandwiches to take with us. They alone made the trip a thousand times more pleasurable. Snacks are the difference between sleeping all day on the bus then getting off and going right to bed. Food is energy and energy keeps you awake to enjoy your trip.
2. Bring a Coat or Small Blanket
It is always easier to take off clothes than it is to put on clothes. The past three bus rides I went on, it was freezing. I only forgot my blanket once. That was all I needed to forget, lesson learned. The bus is cold and you want to be comfortable. Once you sit down that is your seat for the next eight hours. Get comfy.
3. WATER!
Or something to ease your stomach. Don't drink the water all at once because then you would have to pee, and those on board bus bathroom can get pretty nasty. Have one bottle and sip on it all day. Yes, your not hydrating well, but you are also not doing very much. Once your off the bus, chug as much water as you want to. Except if your in Europe to most public bathrooms cost about .50 euro. Water or a soft drink is great when the trip gets rough or when your entertainment makes you queasy. A sip here and there can just be nice to have, even at the risk of awful bathrooms.
4. Entertainment!
It's eight hours. You can't just sit there and do thing. If you can you are a monk or just really patience. I am not. I need a plan and what I am going to do to survive this long, dull ride. I find books are great, if you can handle them, audio books are better. The eight hour ride I just finished, I listened to an audio book almost the whole time. It helps to pick a good long book too. If you bus has WiFi you can use that to write blog post, surf the web for interesting articles or learn about the place you are going and what do once you get there! In the end do something that will take your mind off the long minutes passing slowly by.
5. You Seat
This is the most important tip of all, your seat, your butt’s nest, your place for the next eight hours is so important. Get to your bus early, stand right by where they take tickets at, and be mildly aggressive. Get the seat you want. My favorite is the top deck in the very front, which has the most foot space. I also like right behind the stairs in the front, it has more foot space, a quick exit, and unblocked view. Whatever you do NEVER sit by the bathroom. Remember earlier? IT CAN SMELL SO BAD. It’s not worth it, save your sniffer for the food at your destination and don’t ruin it by sitting anywhere close to the toilet.
There you have it! Five tips that can save your bus trip. Being seated isn’t that hard, but traveling does wear your down. Take it easy, enjoy the relax of a bus ride and be nice to your driver.
Let me know if you have any other tips! I would love to read them in the comments below!
